O-RAN & TIP plugfestVENUE EUROPE

Joint European
O-RAN ALLIANCE and TIP Plugfest
European scenarios

The plugfest in Europe was organized as the first joint O-RAN and Telecom Infra Project (TIP) plugfest. O-RAN and TIP jointly worked on the definition of test cases and test scenarios enabling future cooperation/synergy between Open Testing and Integration Centre (OTIC) and TIP community lab. The plugfest was focused primarily on Open Fronthaul (OFH) interface, associated transport options, and multi-vendor interoperability.
The products and solutions from 28 manufacturers were used in three operators' labs, namely Berlin hosted by Deutsche Telekom, Torino hosted by TIM, and Madrid hosted by Telefónica. O-RAN Radio Units (O-RU), Distributed and Central Units (O-DU/O-CU) were integrated and tested on-site at these labs. More than 80 engineers from participating solutions providers and hosts collaboratively supported the integration and testing, most of them remotely due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

As Outcomes of the Joint European O-RAN and TIP plugfest

  • For the first time, network operators across Europe, and across O-RAN ALLIANCE and TIP communities, tested O-RAN solutions together and shared between them the detailed results, experiences, and lessons learned.
  • The joint, open, and coordinated effort greatly accelerates the technical evaluation of O-RAN solutions, helps to assess and progress the state of the industry, and effectively avoids duplication of efforts for all involved parties whether network operators or solution providers.
  • One of the main learning of the effort was the need to have a stable test environment for further testing to minimize the needs for ad-hoc integration when testing new components, or releases for existing components. This test environment (lab) will greatly accelerate the technical evolution of O-RAN solutions, help to assess and progress the state of the industry, and effectively avoid duplication of efforts for all involved parties whether network operators or solution providers.
